How can college students get health insurance?
There are several ways a college student can secure coverage. Some colleges provide coverage for each semester and the premium is paid in advance. Some students are insured under their parents' plans and can stay insured until age 24. College students can also purchase individual plans from most insurance companies.
Student Health Insurance: Who is eligible?
If the college student is considered a full time student, and the college provides coverage, then the student is eligible to enroll in the health plan. If the student is buying an individual plan they will only be eligible if they meet the underwriting guidelines.

Multinational Underwriters provide international students health insurance. The student can also enroll in the college health plan if offered. In addition, if the student gets a physical exam they can purchase a Blue Cross individual plan without meeting the 3 month residency requirement.
Will my student insurance provide coverage out-of-state?
If your coverage is provided by the school, you will need to review your policy or call the customer service number on your ID card. If you are covered by an individual plan, like Blue Cross, or you're insured under your parents' plan it is most likely that you will be insured.
Will my coverage end if I drop out of school?
A good question to ask when you sign up, this will depend on how long you were enrolled in the school. In most cases if you are paid in advance you will be covered till the policy expires.
When will my student health insurance be effective?
Once you have applied for the insurance and have submitted your application, you should be insured once your payment has been processed.
When I graduate will I lose my insurance coverage?
Insurance plans issued by the college will disclose the effective date and termination date based on your pre-payment, and the terms of the insurance policy.
Can I renew my student health insurance policy?
Most student health insurance plans are renewable. This is a question to ask the insurance company. Some student plans are portable and will travel with you for as long as needed.
Do I have the freedom to choose my doctor or hospital of choice?
This will depend on the insurance plan you join. Most insurance plans require you to stay within their network. If your doctor is a member of the network, no problem.
Can I add a dependent to my policy?
Most student plans will not insure your dependents.
